Ian Hopkinson
Ian is head of the litigation department at mb LAW. The members of his team specialise in public and employers' liability claims against the travel and leisure industries, protecting the interests of tour operators, agents, hotels, airlines, cruise operators and their insurance underwriters.
A large part of the team's work involves defending class action illness claims including noro virus, cryptosporidium and food poisoning.
Additionally, the team has wide ranging expertise in making recoveries from negligent suppliers based in domestic and foreign jurisdictions.
Ian specialises in catastrophic and fatal injury claims. He has extensive experience in handling neck fracture swimming pool cases and has helped a number of tour operators and their insurers successfully defend these high value claims, most notably Healy v Cosmosair plc.
Ian represents clients at Coroner's inquests and defends fatal injury dependency actions. Experience includes death by gastro intestinal infection, legionella, drowning, neck fracture, road traffic accident, electrocution and natural causes.

He also advises on common law and statutory employment issues, including advice on handling disciplinary hearings under the compulsory disciplinary and dismissals procedures, unfair dismissal and selection for redundancy.
Additionally, Ian acts as company secretary to industry trade associations and as trustee on a variety of private trust arrangements.
Joining mb LAW in 1992, Ian previously worked with Taylor and Scott in Australia where he specialised in employer's liability in relation to industrial accident and disease.
Ian lectures widely on areas of law affecting the travel and leisure industries. He is a panel speaker for many trade associations and has addressed audiences at the annual ABTA Convention and ABTOF Conference. He sits as a member of the SHEW committee of the Passenger Shipping Association. Additionally, he is a panel advisor to Yorkshire Tourist Board members. Ian is a member of the Travel and Tourism Lawyers Association.
